Simmons, George F. Calculus with Analytic Geometry. 2nd ed.
Course Reader
MIT students will be provided with a copy of the Course Reader: Jerison, D., and A. Mattuck. Calculus 1. (Not currently available to OCW users.)
Prerequisites
There is no course at MIT which is a prerequisite for this course.
Problem Sets
Problem sets will be assigned every two weeks. Do not put off doing the problems until the last minute. Late homeworks are accepted only if there is a valid medical excuse, or in very special circumstances only with the prior consent of the recitation instructor. You are encouraged to work with other students in the class, but your final write-up should be your own and should be based on your own understanding.
Exams
There will be five in-class exams during the lecture hours. There will also be a three-hour final exam during finals week. The in-class exams and the final exam are closed book and calculators are not allowed. You will be allowed to use a 4" x 6" index card.
At most once during the semester, if you fail an in-class exam you may take a make-up exam to replace the failed exam by, at most, the minimal passing grade for the exam. All make-up exams (both for excused absences and to raise a failing grade) will be given within one week of the original exam.
Grading
Each hour exam will be worth 100 points, the final exam will be worth 250 points, and the graded problem sets will be worth 50 points each. A total of 1,000 points is available.
