Translational and Rotational Damping Demonstration
To show both translational and rotational damping one can use a syringe. Just a small drop of oil between the plunger and the barrel should do the trick. While one hand is used to apply the velocity dependent force, the other hand is held still to feel the force asserted on the syringe. The amount of damping is linearly dependent of the length of the part of the plunger that is inside the barrel. We advise a hypodermic syringe with a ground glass barrel and plunger that are individually fitted and numbered to form an exactly matching set. An example is a Yale Syringe, Reusable, B-D.
