This course was taught during MIT's independent activities period (IAP), which spans four weeks in January, between the fall and spring semesters. For-credit courses offered during this short interim, such as 16.810, are typically time-intensive. In this course, students spend approximately 9 hours per week attending lectures and completing activities. The instructor in charge of each session is provided below in parentheses.

1 Introduction to Design (de Weck) Tour the facilities:
Design Studio,
Machine Shop, and
Testing Lab.
2 Hand Sketching (Wallace) Sketch initial designs of structural part by hand.
3 CAD Modeling (de Weck, Kim) Gain an introduction to Solidworks®.

Create a 2D CAD model of the initial design.
4 Introduction to CAE Finite Element Analysis (Kim) Perform FEM Analysis of designs using Cosmos (Kim).
5 Introduction to CAM (Kim) Gain an introduction to the water jet cutter - machine shop (Weiner).

Program Omax for parts manufacture - alternate groups.
6 Guest Lecture 1: Rapid Prototyping (Bowkett, Nu-Cast Inc) Make version 1 of initial designs.
7 Structural Testing (de Weck, Kim) Verify performance and requirements compliance of version 1 parts in lab.
8 Design Optimization (Kim, de Weck) Gain an introduction to structural optimization programs (Kim, de Weck).
9 Company Tours Carry out design optimization and revisions of the initial design (all instructors).
10 Guest Lecture 2: Bicycle Science (Wilson) Manufacture version 2 of part and conduct structural testing (all instructors).
11 Guest Lecture 3: Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (Sobieski, NASA) Deliver final presentations and awards (de Weck, Kim).
