Writing on the Wall
'Writing on the Wall', a project in progress, consists of sets of photographs (originally 35mm slides) from different parts of China, featuring Chinese shop fronts, signs and other places where Chinese language appears in public. The photographs are annotated in English and Chinese (simplified set). The Chinese captions often provide more detail than the English, but neither actually transcribes or translates writing in the picture (if any). Students are encouraged to explore the sets as they choose; they may also use them as the basis for reports or presentations.
