Course Goals
  • Teach computer programming using Java® with practical work in a computer laboratory.
  • Teach entrepreneurship, with a set of lectures and a business plan competition.
  • Teach self-learning skills through the MIT OpenCourseWare Initiative.

Curriculum

The course will focus on two topics: fundamental concepts of computer science using the Java® programming language, and an introduction to entrepreneurship. The computer science lectures cover the basic elements of object-oriented programming, as well as more advanced topics such as exceptions and graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Each Java® lecture is accompanied by a laboratory assignment that provides an opportunity to test the concepts through hands-on coding exercises. This portion of the class will culminate in a final project at the end of the six week period to demonstrate each student's knowledge of the material presented in the course.

The entrepreneurship portion of the AITI course will cover topics ranging from building business in Africa to the rise of e-commerce in the global community. It consists of a series of lectures about entrepreneurship and several guest presentations given by successful business men and women from the local community. The entrepreneurship series will culminate with a business plan competition with a reward of $330.
