Elliptic Curves

A solid line with three dots, a dashed line with on dot, and a solid red line connecting the dots in a curved fashion.

Elliptic curves are algebraic curves with the remarkable property that the set of points on the curve can be given the structure of an abelian group. This basic fact has a wide range of interesting applications in number theory and cryptography. (Image by Andrew Sutherland.)
