The MITIQ Program, launched in 2002, develops and tests new knowledge in the information quality field as well as information quality benchmarking standards. The program extends the information quality concept as a multi-dimensional and contextual phenomenon to include not only accuracy but factors such as believability and relevancy. An industry consortium is exploring customer-centric information quality management.

Program Director Richard Wang began defining the characteristics that make information a strategic tool more than 15 years ago. MITIQ is an outgrowth of MIT's Total Data Quality Management Program founded by Wang and the Sloan School of Management's J.N. Maguire Information Technology Professor Stuart Madnick.
