The ここ Series: ここ/そこ/あそこ/どこ

ここ/そこ/あそこ/どこ indicates location in a more specific sense than こちら/そちら/あちら/どちら. Compare:
1. アメリカたいしかんは、どちらですか。
2. アメリカたいしかんは、どこですか。
どこ/どちら may be used to refer to "name (identity)" of a place.

れい (Examples)
1. A: ホテルは、どこ/どちらですか。
  A: Where is your hotel?
  
  B: あそこです。
  B: It's over there.
  
  (B: マリオット・ホテルです。
  B: It's the Marriot Hotel.)
2. A: どこ/どちらの学生ですか。
  A: Where do you study?
  
  B: MIT の学生です。
  B: I'm an MIT student.
Compare:
1. どこのとしょかんにありますか。
  What library has it? (lit. library of what place...)
2. としょかんのどこにありますか。
  Where in the library is it?
れい (Examples)
1. A: ばいてんは、どこですか。
  A: Where is a kiosk?
  
  B: あそこですよ/あそこにありますよ。
  B: It's over there.
2. A: ここは、ボストンですか。
  A: Is this (place) Boston?
  
  B: いいえ、ケンブリッジです。
  B: No, it's Cambridge.
3. あそこの店には、ケーキもありますか。
  Does the store over there have cake, too?
4. 日本のどこがきれいですか。
  Where in Japan is pretty?

Express the following in Japanese.

Connection rules: です → でしょう

Anywhere you can now use です, you can substitute でしょう.
でしょう indicates probability, uncertainty, and/or indirectness. Compare:
1. あれは、びょういんです。
2. あれは、びょういんでしょう。
With rising intonation, でしょう suggests seeking confirmation. Compare:
1. A: きれいなのでしょう。
  B: ええ、そうですね。
2. A: きれいなのですね。
  B: ええ、そうですね。
れい (Examples)
1. こんな車は安いでしょう。
  This kind of car is probably cheap.
2. A: あしたは、雨でしょうか。
  A: I wonder if it's going to rain tomorrow.
  
  B: いや、雨じゃないでしょう。
  B: No, it's probably not going to rain.

Express the following in Japanese.

Tomorrow's test is probably easy.
It will probably snow tomorrow.
That class was probably interesting.
The computer there is probably not convenient.
A: (Do you think) that hotel over there is expensive?
B: I guess it probably is, isn't it?

かね(え) suggests deliberate reflection concerning the preceding question/statement.

A: 出口はどこですか。
A: Where is the exit?

B: さあ、どこでしょうかねえ。
B: Hmm. I wonder where...
A: あのりょかんは、高いでしょうね。
A: That inn is probably expensive, isn't it?

B: さあ、どうでしょうかねえ。
B: Hmmm, I wonder.

(B: そうでしょうねえ。
B: Yeah, it probably is.)
A: やっぱりだめでしょうか。
A: (Do you think that) it is no good after all?
