Abstract
In this work, I analyze the problem of coflow scheduling on a multi-stage cross bar switch with a set of intermediate ports. Using a multi-stage abstraction for the data center network enables development of algorithms that reduce the network latency for certain traffic patterns. In this context, I compare the capabilities of the multi-stage network with the cross-bar switch via simulations and theoretical calculations. A theoretical upper bound of 1/e was shown for the ratio of the difference between the minimum total coflow completion times (TCCT) on these two networks and the minimum TCCT on the cross-bar switch. On the other hand, simulations using approximation algorithms gave values of up to 8 percent for the average of the same ratio under randomly generated trac patterns.
