Abstract
Des définitions aux usages : une historiographie du théâtre français au XVIIIe siècle
Restreinte, à ses débuts, à l’analyse littéraire des textes et aux biographies de grands
dramaturges, l’historiographie du théâtre au XVIIIème siècle s’est élargie à partir des années 1930.
Après avoir résumé les deux traditions historiographiques qui ont le plus marqué cette réflexion, à
savoir les approches en terme de « Vie théâtrale » et la « New Cultural History », je m’attacherai plus
précisément à deux approches actuelles qui explorent la question des usages : les travaux au
croisement de l’histoire du théâtre et de l’histoire du livre, d’une part ; l’histoire des théâtres de
société, de l’autre.
From Definition to Usage: A Historiography of the French Stage in the Eighteenth Century
Initially limited to literary analysis and the biographies of great writers, the historiography of
the eighteenth-century French theater has expanded in scope since the 1930s. After reviewing the
two most notable scholarly traditions, those of « La Vie théâtrale » and « The New Cultural History »,
this article considers two recent, promising approaches : the interplay of book history and theater
history, and the study of private theatricals.
