Abstract
Information theory--a field at the intersection of
applied mathematics and electrical engineering--was
primarily developed for the purpose of addressing problems
arising in data storage and data transmission over (noisy) communication
media. Consequently, information theory provides
the formal basis for much of today’s storage and communication
infrastructure.
