Abstract
The Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN) is a US Army-sponsored Department of War (DoW) University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) at MIT. Established in 2002, the ISN conducts fundamental research at the frontiers of nanotechnology and related fields to advance the protection, survivability, and operational capabilities of Soldiers and other US warfighters. Fully integrated into the MIT research enterprise, the ISN brings together faculty, students, and researchers from across the Institute and provides specialized facilities, instrumentation, technical expertise, and research infrastructure that support a broad community at MIT. The ISN also connects this community with scientists, engineers, and technical experts from the Army, other DoW organizations, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, industry, and the broader national-security research community. These relationships allow military needs and technical challenges to inform fundamental research while helping promising discoveries progress toward further development and practical application. ISN research draws upon nanoscience, advanced materials, microelectronics, photonics, quantum science, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and other areas of science and engineering. This interdisciplinary breadth enables the ISN both to contribute to research across MIT and to marshal expertise from across the Institute in response to important scientific and technological challenges.
