Abstract
During the 2025-2026 academic year, the Literature Section, led by Sandy Alexandre, spent considerable time clarifying what literary study contributes to MIT and making that contribution more visible. Faculty and staff strengthened teaching, scholarship, public programming, and external engagement while asking candid questions about curriculum, artificial intelligence, and the unit's future. The year also unfolded amid MIT's two-year budget reset, an Institute-wide effort to reduce recurring annual spending by $300 million. That pressure shaped planning throughout 2025-2026 and will continue into 2026-2027.
