Abstract
For the management information system field, the full-scale charge of the minicomputer has rekindled the flames of controversy over centralization versus decentralization of the data processing function. This paper first examines the general arguments for and against, centralization which are found in the literature. We then analyze some of the weaknesses of these generalized arguments. Finally, we report findings concerning the centralization/decentralization question from a survey of one particular industry -- engineering and construction. We start by summarizing the major arguments pro and con centralization on data processing. The half-dozen most cited arguments in each are noted.
