Abstract
Academic year 2026 (AY2026) marked Amy Keating's fourth year as Head of the Department of Biology. The department continues to be considered one of the best biological science departments in the world, and the biology program ranked second, once again, in Biological Sciences in the QS World University Rankings 2026. Faculty members in the department are leaders in research and education, and the Biology graduate program and associated doctoral programs in Computational and Systems Biology and in Microbiology attract top students from around the world. Initiatives in AY2026 focused on rebalancing the budget in the face of federal funding challenges, continuing strategies for recruiting a community of talented scientists and supporting a strong academic community, and working to make the best use of AI in biology and education. Highlights of the department's faculty, research, community building, and educational programs are summarized below.
