Abstract
We present the results of a search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decays B→πℓ[superscript +]ℓ[superscript -] (π=π[superscript ±], π0 and ℓ=e, μ) and B[superscript 0]→ηℓ[superscript +]ℓ[superscript -] using a sample of e[superscript +]e[superscript -]→Υ(4S)→BB̅ decays corresponding to 428 fb[superscript -1] of integrated luminosity collected by the BABAR detector. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the isospin and lepton-flavor averaged branching fraction of B(B→πℓ[superscript +]ℓ[superscript -])<5.9×10[superscript -8] and a lepton-flavor averaged upper limit of B(B[superscript 0]→ηℓ[superscript +]ℓ[superscript -])<6.4×10[superscript -8], both at the 90% confidence level. We also report 90% confidence level branching fraction upper limits for the individual modes B[superscript +]→π[superscript +]e[superscript +]e[superscript -], B[superscript 0]→π[superscript 0]e[superscript +]e[superscript -], B[superscript +]→π[superscript +]μ[superscript +]μ[superscript -], B[superscript 0]→π[superscript 0]μ[superscript +]μ[superscript -], B[superscript 0]→ηe[superscript +]e[superscript -], and B[superscript 0]→ημ[superscript +]μ[superscript -].
