Abstract
The MIT Portugal Program (MPP), launched in 2006, is a multi-phase strategic international collaboration between MIT, Portuguese institutions, and the Portuguese government, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). Over three phases, it has advanced research and education in fields such as bioengineering, energy, transportation, and advanced manufacturing. The program evolved to include large-scale research projects, innovation initiatives, and joint research in data science; climate science and climate change; earth systems, from oceans to near space; digital transformation in manufacturing; and sustainable cities, with the aim of strengthening Portugal's knowledge base, innovation ecosystem, and workforce. The fourth phase of the collaboration, launched in early 2025 and running through 2030, builds on the Phase Three research areas while expanding into four additional fields: chips and nanotechnology, energy, AI, and space. These additions align with MIT's strategic priorities, including the environment, climate change, and manufacturing. In addition to collaborative research projects, Phase Four places greater emphasis on educational exchanges, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Research and Outreach Activities Collaborative research continued to be a cornerstone of MPP. This year, new research projects were launched through MIT Portugal Program Seed Grants in the program's strategic research areas.
