dc.description.abstract | Computational tools allow designers to consider vast amounts of information when designing structures; however, without intuitive ways to visualize and model this data it is of little use in the creative process. In this thesis, the context for the use of computational design tools is established through a brief review of methods of incorporating structural optimization into conceptual design. Then, a novel method of visualizing variable sensitivity is presented in a way that complements established methods of interactive optimization. The technique depends upon local sampling of the design space, which reveals the behavior of quantitative structural and architectural objectives to variations in geometric parameters. Two case studies are given to demonstrate the different forms the visualizations may take and how a designer might choose to interpret those forms. The visualization technique and design approach contribute to modern practices in high-performance structural design by revealing significant behaviors of structures during the conceptual design stage. | en_US |
