Critical real-time systems have become a popular target for cyber attacks. Attack vectors exist all the way from the application level down to the hardware level. This paper explores a variety of attack vectors for critical real-time systems with special focus on programmable logic controllers. We also discuss runtime monitoring as a solution for securing critical real-time systems and explore the details and challenges of runtime monitoring by implementing our own runtime monitors based on existing design principles
