Abstract
The thesis, based on Močnik (2019a,b,c), proposes a new semantics for epistemic modals and doxastic attitudes, based on the behaviour of epistemic modals embedded under doxastic attitudes. The core data comes from Slovenian, where the existential belief verb dopuščati (‘allow for the possibility’) does not embed universal epistemic force.
