This paper describes a program called GENEX that reasons about the behavior of bacterial operons. It is the first step towards a generalized system that will reason about genetic control mechanisms. The system is easily extensible and able to produce detailed explanations without relying on canned text. Problems in molecular genetics are complicated by uncertainty introduced when reasoning about conformations.en_US
