dc.description.abstractThe last decade has seen a growing interest in the use of collaborative annotation systems, educational tools that allow multiple users to asynchronously comment, highlight, and discuss digital content directly on the source material, transforming traditional classroom readings into a more engaging group activity. Originally developed by MIT CSAIL’s Haystack Group in 2012 under the direction of Professor David Karger, Nota Bene (NB) is a particular collaborative annotation tool that allows students to have annotated online discussions in the margins of textbooks, papers, and even webpages [1]. Though various studies have already proven its ability to succeed in a classroom setting, conversations with key stakeholders have revealed that the tool is missing a key feature found in many other popular collaborative annotation solutions: integration with the Canvas learning management system (LMS) [1–3]. Thus, this work sought to integrate the classroom management features that Canvas provides into the NB platform by supporting Canvas account linking, class importation and roster synchronization, and automatic grade uploading. By doing this, we hoped to improve NB’s quality as a classroom tool, enhancing its value to institutions, encouraging its wider adoption across the academic landscape, and aligning with a much broader trend of creating more integrated, efficient, and user-friendly educational technology solutions.
