dc.description.abstract | In this thesis, I describe the design and implementation of a system integrating a force-reflecting haptic interface, the PHANToM, with a high-powered computer designed to efficiently compute cellular automata, the CAM-8. My goal was to build a system to allow users to interact with three-dimensional bitmapped simulations running on the CAM. Such simulations are far more computationally complex than can currently be computed on the PHANToM host. This system can also provide an intuitive user interface for manipulating data within CAM simulations. Methods for coping with network and computational latencies are described, and example applications are evaluated to explore the effectiveness of the system. | en_US |
