dc.description.abstract | In this thesis, I describe efficient methods for extracting DC power from electromagnetic radiation. This will become an important necessity for a number of applications involving remotely powered devices, such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and bionic implants. I first investigate the problem abstractly, allowing theoretical bounds on system performance to be derived. Next I devise circuit, antenna and impedance matching network design strategies to efficiently approach these theoretical bounds. Finally, I use these strategies to create an experimental power extraction system that collects RF power at low electromagnetic field strengths. This system enables a substantial increase in the operating range of remotely powered devices. | en_US |
