We describe the attenuation of the second vowel formant peak near the second resonance of the subglottal system, and test whether it is a quantal acoustic-articulatory relation (Stevens 1972, 1989) dividing front and back vowels. We find strong evidence for this hypothesis within English and cross-linguistically, and illustrate one way to test proposed quantal relations.en_US
