A statistical analysis was performed to determine the effect of efficiency on the total US energy consumption of automobiles and refrigerators. Review of literature shows that there are many different opinions regarding this issue. Trends in energy consumption were constructed using historical data from government agencies and prior studies on energy efficiency. The discussion includes a range of topics that help to understand what factors influence changes in energy consumption the most. It was found that increasing efficiency was not able to reduce motor fuel consumption for automobiles, but was successful in decreasing electricity consumption for refrigerators.en_US
