The New Products Program (NPP) is a joint venture between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and industrial sponsors. The aims of the program are the advancement of engineering education and the development of new commercial products. This particular project was sponsored by Becton Dickinson, a Fortune 500 biomedical company, to develop a next generation QBC blood analyzer. This thesis documents the mechanical design of the machine as well as the development process used by the MIT student team. The traditional roles of industry and academia in developing new products are being redefined by projects like the BD-NPP.en_US
