Abstract
The author explores the constitutional qualities of place, the role of narratives in framing land-use controversies, and the possibilities of narrative-focused dialogue as a placemaking activity. She suggests planners engage communities in democratic land-use decision-making through the use of narrative-oriented deliberation. Three stories about land use controversy are elaborated, illustrating the importance of narrative in land use planning.
