   <dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en_US">Navy ships require reliable information regarding their power and mechanical systems in order to perform their mission effectively. While today's shipboard systems are quite sophisticated, there are areas for improvement in monitoring individual loads, managing the loads to fit the ships mission, and continuously monitoring mechanical equipment. This thesis presents a method to continuously assess the condition of a rotating machinery system using vibration analysis during the machine's spin-down. A method to determine the thermal storage capacity of a structure, so that HVAC loads can be more effectively managed, is also explained. Finally, the potential impacts of a Non-Intrusive Load Monitor (NILM) on a ship are investigated.</dim:field>
