Introduction to the aims and techniques of formal logic. The logic of truth functions and quantifiers. The concepts of validity and truth and their relation to formal deduction. Applications of logic and the place of logic in philosophy.

The text for the course will be a manuscript I wrote myself, entitled Logic: The Art of Persuasion and the Science of Truth.

There will be weekly homework, a midterm, and a final exam. Homework will count for 50% of your grade, the midterm for 20%, and the final for 30%. Both tests will be open-book.
