Abstract
The 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians (dir. Jon M. Chu, Warner Brothers) opens with a quote attributed to Napoleon: “Let China sleep, for when she wakes, she will shake the world.” Despite its apocryphal origins, journalists, politicians, and directors have cited it in their predictions of an awakening Asia. Entwined with this anticipation is fear of Western somnolence. In a 2018 talk at Georgetown University, former Singaporean diplomat Kishore Mahbubani claimed that the West failed to recognize the imminent possibility of the rise of Asia truncating the last two centuries of Western dominance.1 As Asia stirs from slumber, the West falls asleep.
