A common operation in non-numerical analysis is the comparison of symbolic mathematical expressions. Often equivalence under the algebraic and trigonometric relations can be determined with the high probability by hash-coding the expressions using finite field arithmetic and then comparing the resulting hash-code numbers. The use of this scheme in a program for algebraic simplification is discussed.en_US
