Assignments

The student assignment for this course is to create a web site, as described below.
Deadline: The project is due the week of Lecture 22.

Description

Create a short web site, about 3 pages, on a visual phenomenon or illusion. Examples: Mach band illusion; Motion after-effect; Escher pictures.

The effect must be something that we can see by looking at the pictures (or animations). Use pictures throughout.

Format

HTML or PDF. Interactivity is nice but not necessary. Animations (e.g. Flash™, Quicktime, GIFs) are nice but not necessary.

Structure

A. Here is the effect and here is why it is cool. Perhaps have more than one version.
B. Brief history of effect and its significance for understanding vision. Show variants or related effects that shed light.
C. Conclusions: what have we learned, or where could we go next?

Working Together

Everyone must be first author of a project. If you want to work together, then you can have a second author on the project. However, your grade is based on the project for which you are first author.

Resources

It is okay to get images from the web or to scan them from books. However, you must cite all your sources (URLs or book/journal references). A quick way to get started is to search for "visual illusions."

Goal

If the project is successful, then an average MIT undergrad should look at it and say, "Hey, this is interesting and cool; I want to learn more."
